En los años que Gandhi vivió en South Africa demostró ser una persona muy racista:

“los indios son un poco mejores que los salvajes nativos de África” “los kaffirs (de África) son sucios y viven casi como animales” The Collected Works of Mahatma Gandhi,  Vol I, p. 150

«The decision to open the school for all Coloured children is unjust to the Indian community, and is a departure from the assurance given… that the school will be reserved for Indian children only.» ~ CWMG, Vol. IV, p. 402

“We believe as much in the purity of race as we think they do… We believe also that the white race of South Africa should be the predominating race.” ~ CWMG, Vol. III, p. 256

“Under my suggestion, the Town Council must withdraw the Kaffirs (término despectivo para referirse a las personas de la raza negra)  from the Location. About this mixing of the Kaffirs with the Indians, I must confess I feel most strongly. I think it is very unfair to the Indian population.” ~ CWMG, Vol. III, p. 429

Su opinión de los presos negros: “Only a degree removed from the animal.” Also, “Kaffirs are as a rule uncivilized – the convicts even more so. They are troublesome, very dirty and live almost like animals.” »Reference: CWMG, Vol VIII, pp. 135-136

Tampoco Gandhi fue el mejor modelo  de esposo y padre. Es de conocimiento general que maltrataba a su esposa y era extremadamente violento con sus hijos. (Erikson, On Gandhi’s Truth) Su fanatismo también lo llevó a dejar  morir a su esposa de pulmonía debido a que ella no debía  utilizar  penicilina ya que era un medicamento extranjero. Y esto tal vez puede entenderse basado en sus creencias pero cuando Gandhi se enfermó de Malaria no tuvo ningún problema para usar un “medicamento extranjero” para curarse.
